Multi-sensory math is ideal for students who display a difficulty or a learning difference in mathematics known as dyscalculia.
Beginning with the concrete, students learn to connect the quantity or value and symbol we call “numbers.” Students move to understanding patterns in math, using quick visualization techniques, known as subitizing, to help them count and compute, and associate problem solving with reason.
Multi-sensory instruction in math is important for students with language-based learning differences.
Learning Specialists at EtB use manipulatives, near-point visuals, and other tools and tricks to develop an understanding of how numbers work and the relationship numbers have with our everyday world. A deep connection with numbers and language is also provided, guiding students to understand terms and concepts, instead of just “memorizing procedures for the test.”
Guiding students from using concrete, hands-on objects to pictures, to words, provides learners with a solid foundation for more advanced concepts to be taught and absorbed with understanding.
